Royal Smals has completed this challenging project, for which it was commissioned by the ‘Zwolle Space for the River Consortium’. Two new secondary channels have been constructed alongside the River IJssel at the Scheller and Oldener Buitenwaarden river foreland areas. The low (insufficient draught in summer) and current high water levels have made this project particularly challenging.
We are responsible for the hydraulic excavation of the anoxic material, i.e. the deeper-lying sand and clay layers that have no contact with oxygen. This spoil is transported to a former sand extraction pool by a steel pressure pipe system. Ensuring the spoil is sprayed onto this area carefully is extremely important, as the secondary channel is a new nesting area for the corncrake.
